Sookie was heavy in my arms, half face-down in the pillows beside me with hair sticking to her face. My eyes were barely open, but through slitted lids I peered at her in the early morning light. Neither of us was an early riser. One more thing that assured me my mate was perfectly made for me–we both loved to wake when the sun was high and stay up late into the night, chatting under the stars or gaming. Or… something else.

However, the sound of creaking on the porch had jerked me abruptly from sleep. Easing my arm from under Sookie’s head, I sat up and searched the floor for a pair of sweats. Finding some hung over the arm of the chair by the window, I pulled them on and padded as quietly as I could manage down the stairs. At the door were four Elders, including Elder Gilbert and the mayor.

I debated fixing a bland smile to my face for a moment out of politeness, and decided that it was worth it to save Sookie some trouble later.

Opening the door, I folded my arms across my bare chest. “Good morning. How can I help you?”

“Is Sookie–”

“She is not. It’s early, and she was awake late last night. Would you like me to pass a message along?”

One of the Elders I had not yet been introduced to spoke up. “No. This is acceptable.”

I nodded. “You should be aware there isn’t anything you’ll say to me that I won’t tell her later. She’s my mate. We don’t keep secrets.”

She shook her head at me, waving a hand. “How can you be sure she is your mate?”

The question caught me off guard.

“How–the pull of the bond is unmistakable. Every” – I stopped speaking and tilted my head, examining their faces one by one – “You’ve never even witnessed a fated mate bond, have you?”

“They’re a myth,” sniffed Elder Gilbert at the same time as the mayor said, “Witches do not have fated mates.”

“So you’ve said, and yet unmistakably, my great-grandma was a shifter, and my great-grandfather was her fated mate, a witch, and they knew from the moment they met.”

“Was there spellwork involved?” the final Elder who had not yet spoken asked, squinting at me.

“Excuse me?”

“I ask because Suzannah has confessed earlier that she cast a spell to summon you. Was there spellwork involved in your grandparents’... mating?”

The mere implication was offensive and ignorant, and I suppressed a rumble of anger vibrating in my chest. I tried to tell myself this wasn’t their fault, either. They were raised in this environment, and I was challenging lifelong, generational ignorance simply by existing.

Didn’t mean I was going to go easy on them and simply roll over, but I could try for some patience.

“No. They met totally at random at a Yule party neither of them had planned to attend. They knew from the moment they met, because in the outside world, it’s common knowledge that your fated mate can be from nearly any species, and the timing is up to the will of the gods.
